Business Profiles
Many businesses in the ACT and their management and staff enjoy the benefits of engaging with people with disabilities as customers, suppliers, employees and employers in business the arts and sport - here are just a few of their stories...
Simply Wellness is a Canberra business that has been in operation for over eight years. Simply Wellness demonstrates the key to business success is to provide facilities for all members of the community. By providing access to its services to customers who have a disability with accessible and appropriate means, the Simply Wellness Day Spa has widened the foundations of the target market and at the same time provided valuable products to people with disabilities.
Simply Wellness has shown that it is possible to run a successful business and be inclusive, and that it makes good business sense to include people with disabilities as customers. It has created an environment that people with a disability find safe, with services to assist them in improving their health, fitness, mental state and life quality.
Offering a heated hydrotherapy pool and six Powertone power-assisted toning tables which provide gentle exercise in a safe supported environment the business has ensured appeal to all potential clientele. The motivation in installing these facilities was the documented benefits of these therapies for members of the community who suffered from muscular disability.
To maximise the accessibility and the appeal of the day spa products to people with a disability, Simply Wellness does not charge for entrance to the hydrotherapy pool for carers of disabled persons.
Simply Wellness Day Spa was the winner of the 2007 ACT Chief Minister's Award for Excellence.
Wormald, a business unit of Tyco Fire and Security ANZ, is a leading fire protection specialist and demonstrates a commitment to encouraging, welcoming and supporting disability in the workplace. Wormald is an organisation with a stated and public commitment to achieving an organisational culture which enhances the well being of communities by respecting the diversity of people, nations and cultures. (see Wormald's commitment to Community Involvement).
Wormald's commitment to diversity is an integral part of Tyco's organisational values; values which extend to practical assistance. It has become an inclusive business where employees, customers, suppliers and visitors can see that Wormald has created an environment inclusive of people with disabilities.
In recognising the importance of recruiting and retaining valued staff Wormald retained a staff member who, following an accident that resulted in a significant disability, successfully facilitated his rehabilitation and career transition in conjunction with medical, rehabilitation support and the support of family and friends. The employee's career has been enhanced through the rehabilitation process, and, through retraining is now an integral part of the Engineering Design Team.
Another staff member with a disability was employed full-time as a Service Administrator in the Wormald (ACT) business. Being aware of her disability from the time of interview, Wormald instigated appropriate changes to her work environment. The staff member has prospered in her full-time employment, and has advanced in her career with Wormald.
Wormald was named winner of the medium large business category in the 2007 ACT Chief Minister's Inclusion Awards.
Inclusion is an integral part of the culture, philosophy and business plan of the Yarralumla Nursery.
The Nursery has been employing people with disabilities for over 20 years. Operating as a commercial business with 28 permanent staff, Yarralumla Nursery is the largest wholesale nursery in the Southern Tablelands. Its staff profile is diverse and includes full time employees, employees who have a disability and are supported to work part-time in the Nursery, apprentices, volunteers, people returning to the workforce and people participating in rehabilitation and redeployment programs.
Yarralumla Nursery has demonstrated a sustained commitment to inclusion, and in its day-to day business operations employs people with intellectual disabilities on a permanent part-time basis. It does this through a Job Match partnership with Koomarri Industries.
The key to successful inclusion is a belief that people's strengths and abilities are different, and staff at the Nursery focus on people's skills rather than what they can't do. Employees are provided with tasks that are achievable and challenging, and each employee with a disability is an integral and highly valued member of the production team. Through access to appropriate training each person is supported to contribute to the business development and success of the Nursery.
Yarralumla Nursery has an outstanding reputation within the ACT community. It receives regular visits from interstate and overseas delegations which are keen to gain knowledge on the operational aspect of their inclusion program for people with disabilities. The numerous awards received over the years have also resulted in positive media coverage and community acknowledgement for its achievements.
Yarralumla Nursery is a unique workplace, combining exceptional service and innovation. It demonstrates that a commercially operating horticultural business can combine good business with a commitment to including people with a disability.
In 2006 the Yarralumla Nursery was recognised for its outstanding contribution to inclusion in the community when it won the Inclusion in the Community Award as well as the prestigious Chief Minister's Award for Excellence in Inclusion.
